Learned from Katrina: How a New Orleans Hospital Evacuated
700 People in 2 Days
Virginia McCall, former director of
critical care at MethodistHospital.
Virginia McCall, now director of heart and critical care services
at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Enid, Okla.,
presents a gripping account of how clinicians and EoC staff
joined forces to keep their New Orleans hospital running for
two days evacuating patients, staff and visitors – all
without electricity, running water or sewage, and while the
hospital was quickly flooding with 8 ft. of alligator-infested
water. This is sure to be the most talked about,
thought-provoking session the EC Summit has ever had. You
won’t want to miss it!

9:45 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Managing
Hospital Hazardous Waste
Janine Kraemer, CHMM, an inspector
with the Florida Department of Environmental
Protection.
Many hospitals don’t train employees in hazardous waste
management, making it a common violation. Janine Kraemer walks
you through the types of hazardous wastes typically generated
at hospitals, including how they’re categorized, handler
requirements, hazardous waste generator sizes, and how to
comply with state and federal hazardous waste rules. She’ll
also suggest processes for handling hazardous waste during an emergency.
Take-home tool: Hazmat checklists to aid your compliance.

Preventing Power Failures
David Stymiest, chairperson of NFPA’s
Technical Committee on Emergency Power Supplies and Senior
Consultant, Compliance and Facilities Management, Smith

when performing an emergency gap analysis, how to conduct
a comprehensive power failure risk assessment, strategies
for improving power-system reliability, and specific ways
to apply EC risk management concepts to your
planning process. * Note: Mr. Stymiest’s views do not
necessarily reflect those of the NFPA or its Technical Committees.
