Freestanding ambulatory surgery centers are just
getting their first taste of the biggest ASC payment and
coding changes in 17 years, now that Medicare has put the
new APC system in place. For coders the changes
are momentous – and like most Medicare fixes – offer
pitfalls and opportunities.
You now have 800 new procedure codes to
choose for your ASC and 220 pay groups – you
can no longer use that tidy list of codes that fit into 9 payment
groups. You’ll have to know which codes to bill and how to code
properly so you don’t leave money on the table. It’s even
trickier because the payment decision is the same as a hospital, but
filing your claim to Medicare is different – it goes to Part
B on the CMS 1500, not the UB04.
No need to panic, let ASC coding guru Jo Ann Steigerwald,
RHIT, ACS-GI, ACS-OH,
steer you safely through the ASC coding maze. In just 60 minutes,
you’ll get a handle on ASC coding so you don’t lose out
on valuable reimbursement in 2008:
- Details on which new procedures you can code for in your ASC.
- What to do when the code you want to use doesn’t match the doctor’s code. Medicare’s common working file will look to see if they match up – mismatching codes spell claim denials.
- What two new modifiers you have in your arsenal and how to use them. But beware: One will be used differently from the way you use it in the doctor’s office. And failure to use the second or append on the wrong line will mean you won’t get paid for your supply.
- New opportunities in new technology codes that can be billed out. Up until now you’ve been limited to the IOL code, but now the door to your supply coding opens wide. Find out what you can bill and where to put it on the claim form.
- Ancillary services are another new revenue opportunity. Find out when X-ray services can be billed out separately – the rule has changed.
- Discover what “status indicators” are and where to find and why they will be your new best friend.
- Expert coding tips – find out whether you should use the 50 modifier or simply the LT/RT modifiers.
Don’t scramble to learn the new APC system on your own (which can lead to costly mistakes and billing errors!) – get the information you need now to avoid potential payment delays or denials later.
