What would you do if a hospital told your doctors, “Get an electronic health records system if you want to use our facilities”? This isn’t a far-fetched scenario - it’s happening now. Moreover, legislators claim that EHR systems will increase efficiency, protect patients and reduce costs. Many health care professionals believe they’ll eventually be tied to pay-for-performance.

But as legislators consider regulations and Medicare coaxes you with bonuses, no one will tell you how to move from paper to electronic records without shutting your doors for days or even weeks. Whether you’re planning to purchase an EHR system this year or it is part of your long term goals, let Dr. Richard J. Baron, President of Greenhouse Internists, show you what implementing an EHR system looks like from the inside:

  • Money matters: A vendor might promise you’ll save thousands of dollars by making the switch. Find out how those costs may shift, rather than disappear completely.
  • Practice impact: Switching to an EHR affects everyone - learn how your provider and patient satisfaction, quality of care and productivity will increase in the short and long term.
  • Changes to your work flow: An EHR system can even affect how your staff relays phone messages. Learn how to evaluate your current work flow and determine where the system will require changes to facilitate a seamless transition.
  • Training your team: Find out how to make sure each member receives only the necessary level of training. Richard will show you how to train smart.
  • Running paper and electronic systems: Slowly weaning the practice from paper might make the transition easier, or it might mean you never use your new system. Find out the pros and cons of running parallel systems vs. picking a day to “go live.”
  • Support and maintenance: You’ll need to call someone in the event of a glitch. Determine in advance if your vendor’s support team can meet all of your needs.
