CT scans may cause electronic medical devices to malfunction

X-rays used during CT scans may cause some implanted and external electronic medical devices – including pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators, cochlear implants, retinal implants and implanted or externally worn drug infusion pumps – to malfunction, according to a preliminary public health notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

If you suspect a reportable adverse event was related to the use of CT equipment, follow your facility's reporting procedure. You can also report directly to the FDA's MedWatch program online, or call 800-FDA-1088, or snail mail FDA form 3500.
