2017 ICD-10 Code and Guideline Changes Revealed

Brace yourself, ICD-10 code changes are coming! The ICD Coordination and Maintenance Committee has proposed 1,943 new, 422 revised, and 305 deleted ICD-10-CM codes. Plus, there are 3,500 proposed ICD-10-PCS changes. During this can’t-miss hour, 2017 changes will be revealed and the most critical updates will be analyzed.

  • 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m

Specificity Traps: Increased Specificity with Unspecified Terms

You’ve probably heard that ICD-10 is all about specificity – both in documentation and code choice. So when is using an “unspecified” code the right choice? Are 3-character codes less specified than 7-character codes? Does specificity require more than one code? Is “not elsewhere classified” unspecified? If specificity feels like a trap, you’re not alone. Luckily, Dr. Nichols has studied coding patterns and has loaded this session with code examples that illustrate the key concepts you need to understand to eliminate the gray area and confusion around your use of “unspecified” codes.

  • 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Demystifying Use of 7th Characters in ICD-10-CM

Seventh characters – coder’s friend or foe? For most coders, misuse of the 7th character is rampant and represents the #1 source of confusion around ICD-10- CM diagnosis codes. In this session, we’ll define initial encounter vs. subsequent encounter vs. sequela. We’ll dive into non-union vs. malunion vs. delayed healing. We’ll take the mystery out of the purpose behind the “x” and its proper use. And we’ll work through coding scenarios to ensure you can apply 7th characters the right way!

  • 4:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m.

    Break

  • 4:15 p.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Medical Necessity Policies: Where are your revenue risks in ICD-10?

Just when you thought you were in the clear with ICD-10, critical policy gaps are rearing their ugly heads and presenting new revenue pitfalls. In this session, we’ll reveal the errors currently being identified within coverage policies – from screening colonoscopies to bone density tests and more – and we’ll show you what you can do in the meantime to protect your practice’s revenue.

  • I was extremely pleased. As a Practice Manager, not a coder, I was less prepared than many at the conference. I now feel much more confident in my understanding of ICD 10 and how our entire practice will need to work going forward.
